Reading Putts And Grain On Greens

Reading greens properly goes beyond just judging slope. How the grain runs are essential to the speed of your putts, One of the ways you can see this is by the shine on the grass. This is the first indicator of the speed and the way the grain runs on that part of the green, so a shiny part is always down-grin and fast putt. The dark part of the green is a slower putt, so there are a few simple ways to see this. When you are walking on the green, the grain grows towards the lowest part of the green, so anywhere you see water the grain runs in that direction, or where the sun goes down in the evening the grain runs towards that part of the green, this is good to see for long putts, a great habit to get into is when you walk onto the green mark your ball then go to back of green and imagine you had a bucket of water then pour the water and see where the water will flow towards, walk back behind you ball this give you a good indication of how your putt will roll at the hole. Put take into account for short putts too, along with walking up to the hole. You can notice the grass, how it was cut, and how it runs. You will always see a few bits of grass that tell you its sloped in that direction the fast part. Always check the hole. You will see the darker clay. This is called browning out. This gives you the direction the grain is going in . Just be aware of this for the shorter putts. also you should practice walk in a circle with your eyes closed this exercise will give you a great feel for feeling slopes on the greens, you will start to judge what up and down hill for putting.

.

If you are struggling when putting set up with your weight on you front side tilt back slightly your eyes should be behind and over the the ball this will give you a solid structure with your body so you can get the ball to roll with over spin to the hole, this will stop the wobbel on the ball going towards the hole.
